Kushies Taffeta Diaper Wrap and Kushies Washable Pre-fold Review

The prefold is effective, but we'd recommend finding a different cover to go with it

Our Verdict

The Kushies Taffeta Waterproof Diaper Wrap didn't impress us much as the other covers we tested: it has a “plasticy” feel which makes it loud and crinkly-feeling. However, we found the Kushies Washable Pre-fold to be a good choice as far as prefolds go. They are very absorbent without a lot of bulk, though with any 100% cotton prefold, moisture-wicking is major an issue. These prefolds are made of 100% cotton flannel without synthetic materials, which is important to many cloth diapering moms.
REASONS TO BUY
Prefold is very soft. Thin and trim for a prefold without sacrificing absorbency. Affordable
REASONS TO AVOID
Cover fabric is loud and unappealing. No laundry tabs

Our Analysis and Test Results

Absorbency

Kushies Washable Pre-fold insert scored very poorly in our absorbency testing, earning our lowest score 1 of 10, because it is cotton and has no wicking layer or barrier between baby and the wetness. However, it can hold a lot of liquid helping prevent leakage.

Fit/Leakage

The Kushies Taffeta Diaper Wrap has nice elastic leg gussets to help hold in moisture and mess. The cover is lightweight, also cutting down on the overall bulk of this diaper.

Comfort

The cover is made of nylon so it's thin and there's not much to it. It is plastic-feeling and makes a crinkly sound when it moves. It doesn't seem very breathable.

The pre-fold's fabric is a very soft cotton flannel. It's fluffy and has a nice feel against baby's skin, yet is thin and not bulky, unlike other traditional prefold diapers. It's still very absorbent and doesn't leak, but your baby's movement is not hindered by a bunch of extra thickness.

The pre-fold did pill after several washings, but it still remained fairly soft and didn't affect comfort on baby.

Overall though, even though the pre-fold is comfy, the score on comfort suffered due to the wrap.

Ease-of-Use

We feel that the hook and loop closures are low quality and there aren't any laundry tabs. To us, this is a deal-breaker when it comes to covers with hook and loop closures. Without laundry tabs the hook and loop fasteners can come undone in the laundry and then stick to everything else. The closures also become worn faster which decreases the longevity of the cover in addition to making it easier for baby to pull them off when they are weakened. Yikes!

The Kushies Washable Pre-fold folds nicely (and stays the way you fold it) and fits easily into the cover, unlike other prefolds we tested. Cotton tends to stain easily, so unfortunately these tend to look dirty over time.

Eco-Health

Kushies scored a respectable 8 of 10 score in eco-health. The cover is “lead, BPA, PVC and phthalate free.”

Conclusion

We recommend the Kushies Washable Pre-folds but NOT the Taffeta Cover. Though they worked okay together, there are definitely better covers available, such as the Thirsties Duo Wrap.
