BOB Alterrain Pro Review

A functional and sleek beast capable of conquering any terrain, but its large size and hefty price tag prevent us from recommending this stroller to most folks

Our Verdict

The BOB Alterrain Pro is a fancier BOB jogging stroller with a few fancy upgrades over the usual BOB fare. The Alterrain has a one-handed fold, nicer materials, impressive suspension, and a sleeker fit and finish. We like the pneumatic tires that feel like they will roll over anything and the adjustable tracking and handlebar. This option has a 75 lbs seat limit, which is great for growing kids and longer-term use, and I think it is a potential option for those who want a cross-over stroller and love running. This BOB is long and heavy and not our favorite for indoor use. While we think dedicated runners will accept this indoor problem in stride (see what we did there), it might be more stroller than most casual runners need or want when looking for a double-duty stroller for a one-and-done purchase, especially given the higher price.

Bottom Line This larger jogger is best for dedicated runners, but its heft, length, and price could be deal breakers for someAn excellent performer for both running and everyday life, it is hard to go wrong with this compact folding joggerA sturdy, high-quality crossover option that is easy to run with, but the fold requires two hands, and it doesn't self-standNice crossover with an appeal to many but has some limitations to consider before choosing it over better-performing optionsBudget jogger that is lightweight and easy to maneuver but it lacks dedicated running features like tracking and suspension

Our Analysis and Test Results

BOB (Beast of Burden) was launched by a pair of new fathers looking to run off-road with their babies. Determined to find the perfect stroller, the two designed the first fixed 3-wheel jogging stroller. The company also created the first locking swivel front wheel for increased versatility for everyday events. BOB is now owned by Britax, which specializes in car seats and parent favorite full-size strollers.

Performance Comparison

While the Alterrain earned an above-average score for run-ability, it wasn't as easy to push long distances as some of the lighter options.

Run-ability

The Alterrain didn't earn the lowest score in the lineup, but it struggled to keep up with other BOB products and similar high-end choices. It was definitely above average, and dedicated runners will likely be happy.

The Pro offers adjustable tracking that took us a little practice to get just right.

Once we did, it rolled true and straight without a problem. It also features a deceleration handbrake, suspension, and an adjustable handlebar to suit the pusher's height. The handlebar has five possible positions with a range of 31-48 inches, making it one of the tallest in the group. This could be a critical feature for taller pushers. But beware rotating the handlebar to a higher position does put runners with longer strides closer to the rear axle and well within kicking range.

The locking front wheel is perfect for running, and all of the running features work well. We think most runners will enjoy using the Pro as long as you don't try it side by side with some of the competition.

Because this stroller is heavy, it is more challenging to push and could cause early fatigue while running. It also had more rolling resistance in our tests than some of the competition, with a distance of 27 ft, which hurt its overall score for running. Some options rolled closer to 40 ft during testing.

The Alterrain has shock absorption which helps make running less fatiguing as less vibration and bounciness is translated to the handlebar.

Ease of Use

The Alterrain earned an above-average score for ease of use, and while not in the upper echelon, we suspect parents won't know what they are missing if they've never owned a different option.

The bin on the Pro is large enough for most supplies, but probably won't be large enough for your groceries.

Storage

The Pro's storage bin has easy access and fits our extra-large diaper bag. It has a 10lb storage capacity, which is about average for the group. It includes a cover to protect items from falling out or weather damage.

The seatback of the Alterrain has two mesh pockets for storing items you might need frequently.

If the bin isn't big enough, there is a pocket on the back of the canopy with a zipper perfect for smartphones, two mesh pockets on the back of the seat where you might be able to stash a smaller water bottle, and two mesh pockets in the seating area, where a passenger can stow snacks or treasures.

Despite its size and weight, the Alterrain is easy to fold using one hand.

Fold and Unfold

The Pro folds less like a BOB and more like a Thule. The bottom of the leg rest flips up, and the handle is a slide and twist that folds the stroller in half.

It is a quick and easy fold that creates a product that rolls like luggage. It does not have a carry handle, but it does sort of stand.

The Alterrain harness is well padded on the shoulder and waits with a large buckle and easy adjustments.

Harness

BOB redesigned its buckle and harness for the Alterrain, and they are much better. The no-rethread shoulder height straps work well and are soft. Unfortunately, the buckle is somewhat stiff and could be a problem for some users with wonky thumbs.

Brakes

The Pro has a round bar brake “pedal” with a newly designed brake system. The bar pushes “pins” into holes to engage the brakes, which work well, are foot-friendly, and single-action.

The deceleration handbrake is often considered a must-have for serious runners as it helps slow the stroller downhill. The handbrake on the Pro works well, and we appreciate it in a group of joggers that didn't all sport this feature. While not a deal breaker if a stroller doesn't have it, it can feel like one if you live in a hilly environment. However, this brake is stiff and takes more effort than other designs in the lineup.

The Alterrain comes well-packed, and removing the packaging was the hardest part.

Ease of Setup

The Alterrain Pro took about 5:46 minutes to set up. There is a useful user manual, and no tools are required. Assembly includes adding the wheels and canopy. If assembly is one of your worries, this is one to add to your shortlist.

The Pro didn't have any trouble navigating the tight turns in our obstacle course.

Maneuverability

Maneuverability is critical, whether it is running on the trail or negotiating the grocery store. This stroller can manage anything that comes its way, earning one of the higher scores on our maneuverability tests. With the swivel front wheel unlocked, it makes tight turns and is a quick navigator around the tightest areas.

The Alterrain was able to easily manage tighter spaces despite its large size.
Credit: Matt Lighthart

On pavement and flat surfaces, the Alterrain was a pleasure to push and could easily make tight turns or navigate multiple doorways without a problem. It was more nimble than we thought it would be indoors, given the larger size.

The Alterrain was easy to push and managed uneven surfaces well during testing.
Credit: Matt Lighthart

The 3-wheel jogging design with a locked front wheel and suspension makes it easy to tip and turn when running. This stroller has pneumatic tires and larger wheels to limit the bumps along the way, and we had no difficulties during testing over grass, gravel, asphalt, carpet, wood bridges, roots, rocks, curbs, and more.

The Alterrain Pro includes a rotating handlebar so each parent can adjust the bar to the best height for them. Finding the right height can help prevent the fatigue that leads to discomfort and make navigating this heavier stroller easier.

The Pro did a good job managing the uneven terrain and random pinecones on the off-road challenge.

Transport and Storage

Joggers, in general, are large and heavy, but even with that in mind, the Pro is a big beast compared to the group. With an overall weight of 31.4 lbs, this stroller is one of the heaviest in the group, which hurt its run-ability and transport scores. While we like the beefier wheels and other upgrades that likely contribute extra weight, we aren't sure the trade-off is worth it when other brands offer similar features without the heft.

The folded BOB is 17,357 cubic inches, making it one of the largest options with a swivel front wheel. While perhaps not a deal-breaker for all, this could be a problem for some parents if they can't lift the stroller or fit it in their trunk.

Quality

BOB has traditionally created high-quality products, and the Alterrain Pro is one of their best, earning one of the highest scores in the group. This stroller has a sturdy aluminum frame with few connection points or fasteners and almost no flex. The fabric and design attach the material to the frame, canopy, and basket without bunching or errant stitching for a finished look.

While this option lacks adjustable suspension, something we love on other BOB strollers, it has suspension and an adjustable handlebar for better running ergonomics. The overall fit and finish of the Pro are impressive, with a sleek look that feels modern compared to its brothers at BOB. The stroller we bought was flaw-free, and we felt it would live up to the standards we've expected from the brand.

Kids' Comfort

The Alterrain performed fairly well for kids' comfort and earned one of the higher scores for this metric. This stroller has a sling-style seat with light padding. The deep seat and padded legrest should make any passenger comfy. The seatback reclines almost flat and is easy to adjust. It has a button to recline the seat, and it should take only one hand, but ours took two. We even did online research to see if we were doing it wrong, but alas, it didn't improve.

The Alterrain sunshade is UPF 50+, wind-resistant, and waterproof. It has a large peek-a-boo window with a cover that closes with magnets. The shade has a shaper look than other BOBs, and we like the new taunt look. The canopy is huge and covers almost down to the knee, providing excellent protection from the elements.

Should You Buy the BOB Alterrain Pro?

The Alterrain Pro is a great stroller and there is much to love with the easier BOB fold and the higher-quality look and feel. It could be your cup of tea, and if you choose it, you won't be disappointed. However, it is expensive and one of the highest-priced options in the group. While we like it, we aren't convinced that the added price is worth what you get when better-performing choices cost less. The Alterrain is heavier and longer than many competitors, and we think most folks will prefer the run-ability of select competitors.

What Other Jogging Strollers Should You Consider?

The BOB Revolution Flex 3.0 costs less than the Alterrain and performs better in most metrics. We prefer its run-ability and appreciate the lighter weight. It does have an old-fashioned two-hand fold, but overall, we don't think parents will miss what the Alterrain offers that the Revolution doesn't have. If you want something simpler and smaller that is a runner and sleeker than the Revolution, then the Guava Roam Crossover is your stroller of choice. This jogger offers more for kids' comfort and has a simple one-hand fold that is ultra-small and easy to lift. With a price lower than the Alterrain and better one-and-done stroller potential, it is a better-performing choice.
