Our Verdict

The Momcozy 1080p HD BM01 is a dedicated monitor with a reasonable price. While this option isn't the cheapest in the group, it has some of the best video quality we saw in the dedicated, non-WiFi lineup. The sound is crisp, quiet when it needs to be, and activates when little ones cry with adjustable sensitivities that proved very effective during testing. We love the straightforward setup, intuitive user interface, and the inclusion of the features that matter without cluttering things up with those that don't. The only downside here is that the range is shorter than most and might be a deal breaker in larger homes or spaces with more than 3 walls between the camera and the parent unit. Otherwise, the Momcozy is the dedicated monitor we'd recommend to anyone looking for a basic monitor without all the bells and whistles that often go unused or increase anxiety.

Bottom Line Practical, easy to use non-WiFi options that meet all the basic needs for monitoring a baby without the frills and higher priceA basic and affordable unit, but it doesn't do anything particularly wellWhile cheap, it doesn't work well as a baby monitor as the crying detection failed, and it won't stay continuously on when using other smart device appsNot the best video or sound quality, making it less appealing despite the low priceBare bones budget choice that is good enough to get the job done even if the video is subpar

Our Analysis and Test Results

Audio / Visual

The Momcozy video quality is slightly below average, while its sound quality is among the best in the group. We think sound is more important because it alerts you to a problem and prompts you to check the video, but it is also what helps create a useful, quiet monitor that helps you fall asleep and gain peace of mind. We'd take better audio over video if we had to choose.

The maximum volume on the BM01 is lower than much of the competition, but it is clear and crisp.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

The max volume is on the quieter side at only 78 dB, but unlike some loud competitors, it remains clear and crisp at high volume, so the overall experience could be similar to that of louder monitors that need to be set to lower levels. The quality is less harsh, and there are no grating or warbly sounds that we experience in competitors.

The noise cancellation works well and keeps the monitor quiet until the baby cries. Even without sound activation on, the ambient sound is a low hiss that we couldn't hear at a volume a little below max. We were able to still hear the white noise machine in the room; however, it seemed to struggle to determine that it wasn't baby-related noise. This caused the screen to keep coming on, even when there was no need for it to. We had to set the sensitivity to low to stop this from happening. It seems there was an impact on how well it continued to alert to the baby crying.

The Momcozy sound activation also wakes the parent unit screen for quick, easy viewing.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

The sound activation works well and wakes the screen at the same time, which is perfect for sleepy parents so they don't need to fumble around in the dark in the middle of the night to turn on the screen to check on the baby.

The daylight video is pretty good. The larger patterns are visible even when the smaller ones run together somewhat. Zooming in makes things a little blurrier, but it remains clear enough to see the details required for adequate monitoring. The 3 smallest lines of text were not legible.

Night-vision video has a brighter focal spot in the middle and darker edges. The image isn't as crisp as it was in daylight, but it doesn't lose much overall quality. The pattern and letter charts look very similar. While the video here might not be the best in the group, they are better than many dedicated competitors, and we think it is good enough to see what needs to be seen.

While the Momcozy range is shorter than average, it could be all you need dependin gon your specific situation.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

Range

The range on the Momcozy isn't the best, which could keep it from being the right option for larger homes or for places with many internal walls or other obstructions. While the manufacturer claims a line-of-sight range of 900 ft, it isn't often that a baby needs to be monitored in a single space with no walls. In our tests, the two units remained connected up to 110 ft and through 3 walls. After the 4th wall, it gave up. This could be totally adequate for some homes, but we recommend testing it right away before the return period expires.

Ease of Use

Sometimes basic really is best, and it is hard to argue with the straightforward simplicity of the BM01. It is one of the easiest options in the group to use, so if tech-heavy products have you down, this monitor has your back.

This monitor is so easy to set up that we forgot to take notes because it was over so fast. They auto-pair, and everything is ready to go as soon as you plug them in. Weary, sleep-deprived parents can celebrate the ability to turn it on and go to bed.

The user interface on the parent device is all in a logical place, and everything you need the most has a button and isn't hidden in a menu. There are no weird double-function buttons that make competitors hard to use, and even the functions inside menus are intuitive to find and use.

It has sound activation that works well and also causes the screen to illuminate, so as soon as you hear your baby, you can check the monitor to see what is happening without fumbling with buttons or other devices.

The monitor is very portable with few parts, easy setup, and no WiFi required. Even if you wall-mount it, it easily unscrews and can be put back in place when you get home without a fuss.

Battery Life

The parent device battery for the BM01 lasted 11 hours and 35 minutes in our tests with the screen continuously on at 100% brightness and the volume set at 50%. The manufacturer claims a regular run time of 11.5 hours and 22 hours in ECO mode. We think our results largely reflect the expectations set by the manufacturer's claims.

Features

The BM01 doesn't have many fancy bells and whistles, and this is sort of what we love about it. For basic, straightforward monitoring, it is tough to beat. The features it does have include:

  • Remote pan and tilt
  • 4x digital zoom
  • Room temperature sensor
  • 2-way talk to baby
  • Sound activation
  • Auto screen wake
  • Feeding alarms
  • Lullabies
  • Pair up to 2 cameras

Notably, there is no nightlight. However, in our experience, many parents already have a preferred nightlight or an overhead projection light to soothe and entertain little ones as they fall asleep.

Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Levels

The Momcozy EMF averaged 2.78 V/m at 3 ft from the camera in our tests. This is one of the highest in the group, well above average. If limiting your baby's exposure to EMF is important to you, this could be a deal-breaker, though moving the camera farther from the crib could help reduce exposure.

Security

The MomCozy doesn't connect to the internet, which limits the risk of hacking by someone sitting right outside your house. This is unlikely, and Momcozy lists this unit as “hack-proof,” whatever that means. It uses Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology.

Should You Buy the Momcozy BM01?

The reasonably priced dedicated monitor is one of our favorites. It is crazy easy to use, has a long, long battery life, and offers better audio features than most dedicated competition, making it ideal for those worried about waking up from a deep sleep. The video quality is good enough without knocking our socks off or making us mad, and the plug-and-play design means even less tech-savvy caregivers should be up and going in no time. The downside is the shorter range, but for smaller homes, apartments, or fewer walls between rooms, this option could be the perfect solution for many.

What Other Video Monitor Should You Consider?

If this price is still too high for your budget, the Babysense PRO Full HD can get the job done without frustration. It offers similar performance at a third of the price, but its range and battery life are shorter. Not deal-breakers, depending on where you plan to use it. If you want the best, and your budget is bigger, the Eufy E 21 is our absolute favorite. This unit is a hybrid design with a dedicated parent unit that doesn't require WiFi or app knowledge, and it offers remote viewing capabilities when paired with WiFi. The video and sound are better than both the Babysense and the Momcozy, but it will cost you more than $100 more, which could be a deal-breaker for some.
