Our Verdict

The Momcozy BM08 almost gets it right but misses the mark, working well only when the app is open. The video on this monitor is some of the best we've seen, in the daylight it provides images you feel like you can reach out and touch, at night it offers clarity to see if your baby's eyes are open or closed. We like the simplicity of the setup and the fairly easy-to-use app. However, you can only continuously monitor your little one when the app is open. Which means you can't do anything else with your device when monitoring. There is no picture-in-picture capability, and there is no sound activation to wake the screen or play sound when the phone is locked. While it does offer notifications, they only pop up, are kind of quiet, and nothing at all happens if the sound is off or notifications are blocked. All of these make the Momcozy unappealing as a primary monitor and overpriced for what you get. Unless you have an older device for monitoring only and need to view remotely only when connected to WiFi, we can't imagine who this would be good for.

Bottom Line While the monitor is easy to set up, the lack of monitoring when using the phone for other things makes it a no-goA well-designed hybrid monitor with great video, sound activation, and a camera battery backup, but it costs moreHigh-quality monitor with good functionality that is easy to use, but requires a personal device and lacks sound activationImpressive video and movement monitor that is easy to use, has everything you need, and doesn't require WiFi or a separate devicePractical, easy to use non-WiFi options that meet all the basic needs for monitoring a baby without the frills and higher price

Our Analysis and Test Results

We love the video quality on this Momcozy. The clarity is out of this world, and the colors are true to life in the daytime. We could see the third-smallest letters on the eye chart, and even the smallest patterns were still crisp and visible. Using the zoom, we could read even further down. The video of our test bear is so good that it feels like you can reach out and pet him. It is unbelievably realistic. Night images are somewhat less clear, but still better than most of the competition.

This monitor blocks ambient noise really well, creating a silent monitor when the baby is silent. It has the lowest decibel reading when the baby is asleep, which may help parents sleep more easily. We like features such as nature sounds, lullabies, 2-way talk, and a night light.

Dislike

While the audio is plenty loud, with one of the highest max volumes in the group, the baby's cries are garbled and harsh; even softer sounds like cooing and sighs sound like they come through a tunnel and are exaggerated. While you can hear the baby, it doesn't sound like it does in the room with the baby.

There is a significant delay on the BM08 between when the baby starts crying and when a notification pops up on the parent device.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

The real problem with this monitor is the sound activation and the way the app works on a smartphone. When the sound is on, audible notifications are delayed by more than 30 seconds, and when do not disturb is on, there is no sound, just a badge that pops up, so when you are asleep, you'll never know your baby is crying. If you accidentally block notifications, turn off sound, or use Do Not Disturb, you'll get no notice.

For real-time monitoring, the BM08 app needs to be open.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

Also, when you turn the screen off, there is no option to keep monitoring the audio. With no picture-in-picture capabilities, you can either monitor or use your device for other things, but you can't do both. This means it is best connected to an older device that you only use for monitoring. It pretty much negates the reasons to choose a WiFi option for use with your smartphone.

The BM08 camera is manual-only, with no remote capability to adjust the field of view.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

Ease of use is also subpar. Setup requires downloading the app and making an account, and the measurements are in metric (so US folks get ready to translate). Ours didn't recognize our SD card, so we had to unplug it, reset it, and try again. If you don't use an SD card, then you'll need a storage plan subscription. The app has a bit of a learning curve, but nothing too terrible. The floor stand is about 5 ft tall, and we think it should be taller for most modern cribs to get the best angle. The camera is manual-only, with no remote capabilities and a limited field of view.

Security

Any monitor connected via WiFi comes with inherent security risks. If this is a concern, choosing a dedicated monitor is the best way to prevent issues, but you can limit the potential for hacking by following a few tips.

Tips to help protect yourself from Hackers

  • Always download the recent firmware updates
  • Frequently change your password to a complex 10+ character combination of letters, numbers, and special characters
  • Decrease what the camera can see
  • Always unplug the camera when not in use, so it can't be activated remotely

Should You Buy the Momcozy Baby Monitor BM08?

This is a compelling and intriguing product that didn't quite make the grade. While we suspect most parents will be pleased with it, given the video quality, it isn't a well-rounded choice, as the sound and ease of use are subpar. For the price, there are better choices for video monitors. And even if you are looking for a movement monitor, it wasn't an impressive contender in that review, earning one of the lowest scores, making it not a monitor we'd recommend

What Other Video Monitor Should You Consider?

The Eufy E21 is our favorite monitor, with impressive video and audio, plus a hybrid format that supports remote viewing on your personal device and at-home viewing on the included parent unit. It has a great range and is easy to use, making it a much better value than the Momcozy. If you want a video monitor that can also track movement indicative of breathing, the Babysense True Sleep is the better choice. It comes with 2 mattress sensors (so there is nothing to wear), and the audio is better than the Momcozy, though the video is largely average.
