We tested 6 humidifiers from Levoit, Honeywell, Vicks, Crane, BreatheFrida, and more to find the very best
Hands-on testing is the key to accurate scoring and award selections. We test each option side-by-side for effectiveness, ease of cleaning, ease of use, and more.
A humidifier can be an important piece of baby gear when your little one is sick. Creating a more humid environment, especially while sleeping, can potentially ease some symptoms related to stuffed noses and sore throats.
Our favorite humidifier for baby is the Levoit LV600HH. This option is very effective and works quickly to help increase ambient moisture. It is super easy to use and ultra-quiet, making it a great humidifier for nurseries.
If you need something a little more wallet-friendly, the Crane Drop is a simple-looking, straightforward model that is very basic but equally effective. We like that it is quiet and easier to fill than some contenders.
We've conducted scientific testing on more than 22 humidifiers, including the 6 options in this review. We used these humidifiers in real life with multiple children for months. We also did side-by-side laboratory testing for relative humidity levels, effectiveness, cleaning, noise, and more.
Editor's Note: We updated our humidifier review on October 28, 2026, by removing discontinued products.
Quick Picks
Here's a quick list of our favorite Humidifier recommendations.
The Levoit LV600HH is an ultrasonic option that comes with a remote and a humidistat, giving you more information about humidity levels. It also features a digital display, timer, and handle on the tank for easier filling and carrying. Our tester stated, “While all the features can feel intimidating at first, I loved having more information and greater control.” This easy-to-use humidifier has a modern aesthetic and includes a cleaning brush for the ultrasonic plates and smaller spaces. We like that it can sit by itself in the sink for easier filling, and that the bottom opening is large enough to reach inside for better cleaning. It offers warm or cool mist and is rated for a larger room, up to 750 sq ft, with a max run time of 36 hours and an automatic shut-off when the tank is empty. It is also one of the quieter options, measuring less than 40 dB in our tests.
The Levoit is one of the most expensive humidifiers we tested, making it a poor choice for tighter budgets or for those who only plan to use it infrequently. An option like the Crane Drop might be a better choice as it is quiet and effective but less expensive. This product also isn't baby-centric, and it lacks any design or features specifically for little ones. It is also one of the biggest and heaviest. Despite the above-average price, we think it offers exceptional effectiveness, and the customization makes it easier to manage room humidity just how you want it.
The Crane Drop is a smaller ultrasonic product with a dial-based user interface suitable for up to 500 sqft. It is super quiet, with a decibel level below 40 dB in our tests. It has a fun shape with a narrow opening that lets moisture escape, making it mesmerizing to watch. One tester child stated, “I could play with this mist all day.” Plus, it is fairly small, so it can fit on smaller shelves or end tables. This unit is easy to fill and looks at home in most nurseries. It features auto-shutoff when empty, and you can purchase filters to limit the formation of white dust.
This humidifier is hard to clean; no matter what brush we bought, there was a part of the water reservoir we couldn't reach. We consider this a serious concern and recommend frequent cleaning (see the manual) to avoid any bacterial buildup. However, things can fester, frustratingly just out of reach. Our tester states, “I found cleaning this to be the most annoying thing; there are parts you simply cannot reach.” This unit also lacks programmability and humidity-level measurements, so the room's humidity level remains a mystery without a secondary product. However, we like this Crane for its looks, effectiveness, and silence, and the lower price is one that most families will love for occasional use with sick kiddos.
The Crane Adorable is an animal-themed, cool mist, ultrasonic baby humidifier with various animal options to choose from. It is a nursery-friendly humidifier that little ones are drawn to. It features auto-shutoff, a simple user interface, and available filters to cut down on the pesky white dust (we highly recommend using the filters). This unit is quieter than the average humidifier, with a measured noise level of 40.2 dB, making it suitable for nighttime use in a nursery. The noise it emits feels like white noise that is not disruptive to sleep. Our tester states, “I don't think it is as quiet as some other contenders, but it is a soothing sound babies seem to like.” We like that this option can be a nursery focal point or blend in with the decor.
This product isn't as effective at creating humidity as much of the competition. It had an average humidity of 83.5% at 180 minutes in our lab tests. With results in the lower third of products, it could struggle in larger spaces or drier climates. However, over time, it raised levels higher than most baby-related uses will require. Our tester said, “You don't need a room to be super humid for a humidifier to be helpful.” If you want a higher percentage of humidity, the Levoit LV600HH created some of the highest humidity in our tests. All said, thanks to the delightfully inspired design, we love this animal-shaped option as a perfect nursery pick.
We've been testing humidifiers since 2013, with our early testing, including humidity measuring and white dust comparison not found in competing reviews. We researched more than 20 humidifiers for our humidifier review. We considered popular, high-quality, and adorable options from a variety of brands. Each humidifier was put through more than a dozen tests, including tests for humidity-generation efficiency, ease of use, white dust formation, ease of cleaning, and more.

What's the Best Value?
Our testing indicates that in the world of humidifying products, you typically get what you pay for. However, we still found some effective products that won't empty your wallet, and others may cost a little more but offer features or functionality that add value for those with specific goals. The Crane Drop is affordable and one of the most effective at creating humidity in our lineup. This option is quiet and effective. The Crane Adorable is a few dollars more if you want something more baby-centric.

Ease of Cleaning a Baby Humidifier
We feel the ease of cleaning is one of the most critical test metrics for this kind of product because keeping your humidity maker clean is essential to ensure that it does more good than harm. When water sits stagnant in the tank or base, it naturally accumulates bacteria and fungi. Although there are ways to reduce these troublemakers, there is no healthy way to eliminate them permanently or on an ongoing basis. As the keeper of your child's health, you must clean all parts of the unit weekly or daily to keep mold and bacteria at bay. We recommend following the manufacturer's user manual.
You might be surprised that descaling or reducing mineral deposits on the base is also necessary for the cleaning routine. Doing this helps reduce the risk of unhealthy pathogens being released into the air. To start, you can reduce the required descaling effort by using distilled or filtered water instead of tap water. Many of the units in this review also have bleach sterilization instructions.

The MistAire opening is small, and hands won't fit inside; it requires a bottle brush to clean effectively. Credit: Abriah Wofford
The Honeywell HUL520 is arguably one of the easiest to clean, with a wide opening we could fit our hands into, and all parts are reachable. Even the base is less offensive than most competitors. The hardest option to clean is the Pure Enrichment MistAire. This unit comes with its own brush for the sonic plate, and it requires a bottle brush for the mist tube. We couldn't fit our hands inside the tank, even though some of us with small hands had no luck. This made it harder to clean since we had to rely on the bottle brush alone. The Crane Drop is also harder to clean, as there were parts we couldn't reach with brushes or hands.

Baby Humidifier Effectiveness
We test effectiveness by measuring humidity levels in a room approximately 150 sq ft. Award winners generate a lot of mist quickly to raise and maintain humidity levels. This functionality is key for a worthwhile mist maker.
Throughout testing, we kept conditions as controlled as possible to focus on each product's mist creation and eliminate external variation. We ran each humidifier at its highest setting for 3 hours and logged the humidity percentage every 60 seconds throughout the test.

The effectiveness of each option at creating significant humidity may not be as relevant to you as the noise it produces or how easy it is to clean if your goal is to humidify a tiny room or only the area around the crib. All the options we considered can adequately raise the moisture level in the immediate vicinity of the unit, even if they don't affect the entire room.

The Levoit LV600HH is the most effective. The least effective option, which struggled to raise moisture levels over time, is the Pure Enrichment MistAire. The test result analysis is related to the competition and shouldn't be interpreted as being unable to humidify. However, you likely want to use these options in small rooms or when you only want to raise the humidity in the area around your child.

Noise
Humidifier noise can range from barely audible to sleep-disruptive, depending on your sensitivity or feelings surrounding white noise. We measure the decibel level using a sound meter placed 6 inches from the unit, operating at its highest setting. We also consider the type or quality of the sound produced. Is it high-pitched? Repetitive? Drippy?
We feel that “white noise” is more conducive to restful sleep than a single specific pitch that could be grating over time. In previous testing, evaporative humidifiers were significantly louder because they have a fan running to create airflow for evaporation. This review only includes ultrasonic humidifiers, which are much quieter.

The loudest in the group, Vicks Filter Free, had a reading of over 46 decibels. This option also made dripping and gurgling noises that we didn't experience with competitors. The quietest readings were below 40 for several humidifiers in the group. The highest-scoring option for noise, and therefore the quietest, was the Crane Drop.

Ease of Use
We compare each option's user interface, features, and design. The same level of functionality is not found across the competition. Ideally, you want a product that is “plug and play,” so you don't need to spend excessive time referencing the manual or setting it up beforehand.
However, you may need a slightly more complex system if you want a product with programmable settings and additional features. As long as you are ok with taking some time to learn the program, the tradeoff may be worth it. Some options have a simple dial for on/off and the mist output level adjustment. Other options have digital interfaces with more features to control the humidity percentage in the air or control a shut-off/run timer. Depending on your goals and usage, a simple dial may be all you need or not enough.

The Levoit LV600HH earned a top score for ease of use as it can monitor humidity levels and has programmable interfaces with timers. While these useful features make the initial learning curve steeper than the competition's, we think they make long-term use easier, as you can set and forget a humidifier and avoid routine checks of humidity levels. The hardest option to use is the Pure Enrichment MistAire. The user interface is straightforward, but the fill opening is small, and the tank shape doesn't sit on its own in the sink, making it a challenge to fill. All of the current review selections feature an auto-shutoff when the tank is empty, which is a plus.

White Dust
We also tested how much white dust each unit makes. We scored the outcomes of these tests for comparison, but we didn't include them in the overall scoring. We present it here for those who are concerned about white dust. Using distilled water and a filter (if available) can help reduce the production of white dust. Using an evaporative humidifier can also reduce this issue.
This white dust is a byproduct of water mineralization during processing on the ultrasonic plate. Using distilled water can greatly reduce dust, but it might not always be convenient or economical to use it with your humidifier (though you should).

The Crane Drop white dust was minimal. Credit: Abriah Wofford
This can also vary based on whether the humidifier has a filter or an optional filter you choose to use. While it is hard to say exactly what your specific experience will be, there is value in seeing how the products compare side by side to get a relative idea of what you'd experience by choosing one over another. The Honeywell HUL520 created the most dust in our testing, while the Pure Enrichment MistAire created the least.
Other Notable Humidifiers
There are many humidifiers on the market. On our sister site, TechGearLab, we've tested even more popular humidifiers, though they might be less nursery cute and more practical. Here are some of our favorites.
Levoit OasisMist 450S — This Levoit offers the versatility of ultrasonic and steam technology to make humidity. They can be used together to create an ultra-fast increase in room humidity. It's pretty easy to clean, but the noise level might be a little loud for some babies.
Dreo HM311 — This Dreo is super easy to use and perfect for smaller rooms. We think it is one of the most straightforward to clean and fill, and it could be all you need to get a sick kiddo through the night. While it wouldn't be our pick for large rooms or high humidity, it is so simple that it is hard not to love it for smaller uses.
Levoit Classic 300S — This Levoit is super easy to clean, has a large opening for filling, and an easy-to-see display. It isn't as effective or as fast as some competitors, but one tank seems to last forever, which could be a plus for harried parents. One caution is that the display creates a free nightlight, which could be a pro or con depending on your baby and your needs.
How to Choose a Great Humidifier for Your Baby
Finding a useful humidifier for your baby shouldn't be hard. Because the needs are usually infrequent and the spaces are smaller, it changes the game somewhat compared to finding a humidifier for your whole home or larger shared living spaces.
Keep it Clean
We can't stress enough how important it is to keep your humidifier clean. The easier it is to clean, the more likely you are to do it. So we think this is more important than any other consideration. For safety, cleaning must be performed as outlined in the manual, frequently and without fail. We look for large openings, spaces where hands and brushes can fit. No small spaces that require tiny brushes. Avoid humidifiers with spaces that can't be reached.
Effective Humidity Creation
Next up is choosing an option that creates enough humidity to meet your needs. Again, most nursery humidifiers don't need to be uber-powerful or raise the room's humidity to tropical levels. Buying the right-size option with suitable, efficient humidification is key.
Keep it Quiet
None of the humidifiers are super loud, but some are oddly noisy. In the end, you know your baby best and what they can sleep through and what they might find soothing. We encourage you to choose an option that is either non-disruptive or could be helpful in creating a peaceful space suitable for sleep.

Conclusion
Finding the right humidifier for your nursery can be the difference between congested sinuses and a night of easy breathing. A useful and effective humidifier can help raise the room's moisture content, which can significantly help little ones sleep when congested or unwell. Selecting the right option can be tricky. Armed with details from our testing, we are confident you can find the best product for your baby and wallet.
