Our Verdict

The Momcozy BM08 has great video, and its WiFi range lets you monitor from just about anywhere. It doesn't require a subscription if you pair it with a microSD card, and there are no wearables required for tracking. However, in our opinion, this is where the good things end, and the frustration begins. This monitor is challenging to set up with a stand that is subpar at best. The camera is stationary, and the angle required to track health metrics severely limits the field of view. But the real nail in the coffin is that the monitor we tested detected breathing and heartbeats from inanimate objects, convincing us that the technology just isn't there yet to be considered reliable. If you combine the disappointing reliability with the lagging alerts when crying is detected, the lack of real sound activation, and ultra-quiet push notifications as alerts, it just isn't a monitor we'd recommend for parents serious about tracking anything.

Bottom Line While the video is good, ours detected breathing on a doll, which doesn't inspire confidenceA straightforward movement monitor that is easy to use, but could require a second monitor to hear its alert when in a different roomA vitals tracking monitor that does a lot, but the price is high, and the design isn't perfectA good, dedicated monitor that is easy to use with set-and-forget movement monitoringReasonably priced monitor, but it falsely detected vitals on a doll, making us unsure about its reliability

There isn't much to like in this overpriced monitor. However, it is convenient that there is nothing for the baby to wear, so parents won't forget it, and the video quality isn't bad. It also doesn't require a subscription, so at least the price you pay is the lifetime cost (plus an SD card if you want one).

Its EMF is on the lower side (0.73 V/m) but still higher than average. Unfortunately, because of the technology, you can't place it farther from the baby or crib, so it is what it is.

Dislikes

We aren't even convinced this monitor works for movement monitoring. It should be a contactless device that uses a technology called “mmWave” to track breaths and heartbeats per minute, with the camera over the crib, facing down.

The Momcozy has detections you can toggle on or off, but there is no sensitivity customization.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

However, in our tests, it detected both heartbeats and breathing on a teddy bear and on a doll. Even if we choose to believe it works as expected and our teddy bear has come to life, it doesn't provide alerts about this information; instead, it just reports it, which you can view on demand.

It offers cry detection and an alert if something covers the baby's face (neither of which has adjustable sensitivity), but it arrives as a quiet push notification that is not useful when sleeping. It has a chime similar to a text message popping up. It also has a significant delay that is much longer than competitors.

It comes with a stand that seems ok, but compared to better stands, it starts to feel cheap and wonky, with cords you thrash to the side using velcro strips instead of threading through the pipe. We worry that over time, these could become a strangulation hazard if not maintained, as the whole thing sits very close to the crib.

In the end, it doesn't seem like a reliable choice; it is harder to use and set up, and the alerts are virtually useless for overnight monitoring when you are dead asleep.

Should You Buy the Momcozy Smart BM08?

Nope. We don't recommend it. It really struggled in most areas and failed to offer reliable monitoring. With technology that supposedly uses AI to track breathing and other vitals, our unit tracked vitals on a teddy bear, giving us serious pause as to how reliable it is and whether it will create more anxiety for parents rather than less. Also, there doesn't seem to be any way to set up alerts for health-related tracking, so it doesn't provide parents with any information to respond to. In our opinion, this makes it virtually useless for what parents are looking for in a movement or vital-tracking monitor.

What Other Movement Monitor Should You Consider?

If your goal is to track vitals like heart rate and blood oxygen levels, a sensor sock like the Owlet Dream Duo (Gen 3) is a better pick. This monitor tracks multiple vitals and provides alerts. However, it is expensive, and the camera is not remotely controlled. If you think too much tracking will cause you anxiety, the Nanit Smart System with Floor Stand includes real-time safety notifications based on data from the breathing band. If you are on a budget and just want an alert if movement indicative of breathing changes, then the SNuza Hero SE is a simple solution you can pair with an excellent video monitor.
