Performance Comparison
Ease of Use
It was tricky for us to get the baby in and out of the infant insert that is attached to the seat of the chair. In fact, it was nearly impossible to do if she was wearing shoes, as the rubber sole would catch and stick against the material of the infant insert.
For us, it is comparable to the often tricky act of getting your child in and out of the baby swing at a park, except this chair has a sturdy back and is not quite as flexible as a swing might be. We also found the harness to be extremely difficult to adjust. In fact, it is nearly impossible to do so with a little one inside, meaning you have to go through a trial and error process, taking the baby in and out until you can find the correct size for the harness. If you use this chair for only one child, this only has to be done once and may not be a big deal. But if you plan to use this chair with multiple children of different sizes, you will be frustrated with having to readjust the harness every time.
Baby's positioning once in the chair, however, was excellent. We followed the manual guidelines to position the footrest, and it was perfect. When finally in the chair, the seating position is ergonomically correct; however, there are a few issues with comfort using the chair without the Mini Baby Cushion. The harness straps did not tuck away and lay against the baby's back annoyingly, and there is a large piece of plastic on the backside of the harness that leaning against will also be uncomfortable. However, these issues can be resolved if the extra cushion is used, so we included it in this review. We highly recommend purchasing it alongside this chair.
Ease of Cleaning
The water-based, non-toxic paint on the Tripp Trapp is easy to wipe clean. However, the website recommends drying the chair afterward to avoid moisture cracks and staining the finish.
We find it highly doubtful that a busy mom will have the time to wipe down the chair and then dry it. We sure didn't. Additionally, Stokke warns to keep the chair out of direct sunlight, as it will fade the finish. Although there were a lot of straps to wipe clean, the buckle itself did not have any gaps large enough to collect crumbs.
The fabric of the cushion is a thick canvas that is relatively easy to wipe clean. For bigger messes or just an occasional deep clean, it can be machine-washed and dried, which is a big plus and will help keep the chair looking sharp.
Quality
The Tripp Trapp sure didn't disappoint when it came to quality, and there is no doubt that the product is as sturdy and stable as they come.
The durable European beech wood it is constructed of is a natural material with a rich surface, natural pattern variation, and color combinations. To make the deal even more enticing, Stokke transports all its high chairs in an environmentally friendly way that reduces emissions. Furthermore, we loved that they took the extra step to get a safety certification from JPMA. Way to go, Stokke.
Ease of Set Up
It took us an average of about 14 minutes to set up this chair, which is longer than average. It comes unassembled with many different parts to puzzle out. The screws were a bit difficult to get started, and the manual uses only words and no pictures.
Footprint and Portability
The Tripp Trapp did quite well in terms of footprint and portability. It had the smallest footprint of all nine chairs, something to keep in mind if you have a smaller kitchen or dining area.
The company added gliders to the chair that lengthen the back legs to provide additional backward stability and make pushing back from the table easier without fear of tipping. We think this is something you will surely appreciate for safety's sake and the added convenience. So, although this chair has no wheels, we did not have any trouble maneuvering it around our kitchen and dining areas.
The Stokke is one of the lightest chairs of the bunch, weighing only a touch over 15 pounds. Regarding portability, it does not fold flat, or fold at all for that matter. However, we found that it was unnecessary to store this chair as you can slide it up to the table and out of the way, much like a regular chair.
Should You Buy the Stokke?
If you're not afraid of the fussiness of getting a baby in the seat or the price tag, The Stokke Trip is a space-saving, lightweight, long-lasting chair that can stand the test of time through multiple children and multiple phases of growth. This high chair is a high-quality wood choice that has withstood the test of time in many homes.
What Other High Chair Should You Consider?
The Abiie Beyond Wooden is a less expensive counterpart with similar features but a seat that is easier to get the baby in and out of. With a lower price and sleek look, we think it is an interesting option for those who want something like the Stokke but without the higher price tag. The Abiie is a convertible seat that can be used for years to come or for multiple babies.
