Our Verdict

The Nuna TRVL features sleek lines and premium materials, giving it a more refined look and feel, especially for a travel stroller. It glides smoothly, turns easily on most terrain, and works with Nuna Pipa series car seats without an adapter. Some limitations include its folded size not meeting the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards for in-cabin transport, a smaller storage basket capacity, the folded canopy extending above and touching hands while pushing, and the absence of a carrying strap for easier transport. Also, the passenger's comfort is disappointing at this steep price. Overall, the Nuna TRVL might be suitable for families already invested in the Nuna system, but there are other travel strollers we like better for lower prices.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Founded in 2007, Nuna is a global company with origins in the Netherlands. That same year, they introduced their very first baby gear.

Transporting and Storing

When it comes to transporting and storing, the Nuna TRVL isn't the worst performer, but it doesn't stand out, and this is the area where it struggles the most.

The Nuna TRVL weighed 15.6 lbs, which is heavier than the average stroller weight of about 14 lbs but still lighter than the heaviest options in the group, which approach 17 lbs.

The Nuna's folded size doesn't meet IATA carry-on size limits, which might be disappointing for some families.

When folded, it measures 20.5"W x 11.3"H x 27.2"L, or 6,301 in^3, which is above average. Although it may be compact enough for storage and travel, it doesn't meet the International Air Transport Association (IATA) carry-on size guidelines. Nuna recommends gate-checking it for easier airline travel. If a more compact fold is a priority, we tested several options that have a smaller fold, which could be worth exploring if you frequently travel.

While the Nuna TRVL comes with a carrying bag, you'll likely carry it by the bumper bar.

We wish it had a shoulder carry strap. You can lift it by the bumper bar, but it's not as comfortable or convenient as a dedicated carry strap, especially if you're juggling a diaper bag or child. On the plus side, it comes with a carrying bag, but this is less convenient for quick folding and carrying needs like hopping on a bus.

Ease of Use

The Nuna TRVL is user-friendly, with straightforward features we believe most users will enjoy.

Fold and Unfold

Folding and unfolding the Nuna TRVL is straightforward, especially compared to those requiring extra effort and hand dexterity. You slide the handlebar lock and press the button simultaneously, which is often possible with one hand.

The stroller then folds itself, collapsing automatically. You may want to give it a gentle nudge to ensure it's as compact as possible. When folded, it stands upright

Quick errand or bringing along the diaper bag, the storage basket handles both, but accessibility differs.

Storage

The storage basket is large and easy to access. Its 10 lbs weight limit is lower, particularly when compared to the maximum limit, which is twice that capacity. However, this isn't a big issue if you only carry essentials. A medium diaper bag fits easily, and even a large bag can fit with some maneuvering. Packing lighter improves access, though.

The release button sits right on top of the Nuna TRVL buckle, so it’s easy to find and press when you need to unbuckle.

Harness

The TRVL harness is straightforward and easy to use. We like the MagneTech Secure Snap™, a self-guiding magnetic buckle that automatically locks into place. It helps the components click together quickly, and we consider it handy. Releasing is just as simple with a quick press.

Brakes

This stroller has a one-step foot brake. You press down to lock it and press again to unlock. It's easy to operate, but it isn't color-coded to indicate whether it's engaged.

Ease of Setup

It took us about 15 minutes to assemble this stroller, which involved several steps. The frame comes folded, and you'll need to attach all four wheels, snap on the canopy, fasten its fabric to the back of the seat, secure the rear of the storage basket, and click in the belly bar. We didn't find these steps difficult; they were more time-consuming than other strollers we assembled. The good news is that the instructions are clear, with helpful pictures and straightforward text.

Car Seat Compatibility

The TRVL is compatible with Nuna's PIPA series car seats, which attach directly to the bumper bar without needing adapters. However, it only works with PIPA car seats and no other brands.

Maneuverability

Maneuverability is a strength of Nuna TRVL.

This stroller has EVA foam-filled, airless wheels, so flats and maintenance aren't a concern. The front wheels are 6.5 inches, and the rear wheels are 8.5 inches. It rolls smoothly on flat surfaces like airport terminals, hotels, or paved paths, and easily handles turns.

The smaller front wheels aid steering, while the larger rear wheels add stability.

The ride becomes slightly bumpier on moderately uneven surfaces, like dirt paths with pine needles or packed sand, but still outperforms most travel strollers. Of course, travel strollers aren't designed for off-roading like jogging strollers, so perfection isn't expected. Locking the front wheels into a fixed position adds more stability on these surfaces, though it increases the turning radius and requires two-hand steering. The larger rear wheels help the TRVL hop curbs easily, but bigger obstacles, like giant pinecones, remind you that it's still a travel stroller.

The Nuna offers high-quality materials and sturdy construction.

Quality

The Nuna TRVL is an attractive travel stroller with refined details, like leatherette accents, high-quality fabrics, a sturdy frame, and well-made components.

We appreciate that the fabric is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meaning it's been tested for low chemical emissions. After testing, we noticed some minor scuffs near the footrest and on the Nuna logo. While these marks are cosmetic, they suggest the stroller might show wear a bit faster with daily use. Still, given its solid build, we think it can hold up for years and through multiple kids.

Kid's Comfort

The Nuna TRVL offers average considerations for kid comfort. However, we think most children will be comfortable riding in this stroller.

Only a few strollers in our lineup offer more to keep little passengers cozy.

Seat

The removable bumper bar clicks in and out with ease. You can pop it off entirely for wide open access to the seat or release one side and swing it away. The leg rest offers two positions, adjusted by pressing internal buttons on either side. You can prop up legs for naps or drop the leg support down when they're sitting up sightseeing. Reclining the seat is straightforward, with a strap mechanism behind the seatback. While the seat doesn't go fully flat, it does give your child a comfortable lounge for stroller naps. You can roll up the canopy fabric to boost airflow on warm days.

The TRVL features a dedicated peek-a-boo window, though it is somewhat smaller.

Sunshade

The canopy is UPF 50+ and water-repellent. It has a small mesh peek-a-boo window, so the view is slightly more limited. The canopy creates a dome-like space, and it can extend for additional coverage. It offers decent coverage, but not the most.

When the canopy is closed (folded back), the fabric can touch the pusher's hands. While some may not mind, others might feel bothered or distracted. This feels like a design flaw, and we didn't like it. We imagine some parents won't love it either.

Should You Buy the Nuna Trvl?

The Nuna TRVL is a decent stroller, but we're not convinced it's worth the investment for travel. This stroller might appeal to you if you're considering a Nuna infant car seat. However, with other options offering a more compact fold, lower weights, and better performance, it's hard to justify choosing the TRVL. It's also priced closer to a full-size stroller, so if you're planning to spend that much, it might be worth considering a full-size stroller instead (since this one isn't International Air Transport Association (IATA) compliant as a carry-on anyway).

What Other Travel Strollers Should You Consider?

The UPPAbaby Minu v3 offers stronger overall performance than the Nuna TRVL and is compatible with select Nuna PIPA models when used with adapters. The same applies to the Joolz Aer+, another top-performing stroller that accepts PIPA seats with adapters. Both are high-quality, IATA-approved travel strollers, but they differ in their strengths. The Minu v3 stands out for its thoughtful design and features, such as a storage basket with one of the highest weight limits in its class. The Joolz, on the other hand, is narrower and lighter, making it even easier to zip through airports and city streets. The best option will probably depend on which set of features suits your needs.
