Our Verdict

If you're looking for an affordable high chair that will fold up when not in use, look no further. The Munchkin Float is a lightweight, low-profile high chair that won't take up your entire kitchen or dining room. Although it doesn't come with wheels, it is easy to move around when needed thanks to its lower weight and smaller footprint. The wood and plastic materials are smooth and feel high-quality. We also found the tray very easy to put on and take off, the five-point harness easy to use and adjust, and we appreciated that the footrest adjusted to accommodate smaller babies. We did wish the leg divider extended all the way down, and that the seat tilted for slimmer folding, but overall, we enjoyed the stylish simplicity, ease of use, and portability of this affordable high chair.

Ease of Use

We found the Munchkin Float very easy to use. It's intuitive and simple, and didn't even require an instruction manual to set-up.

The folding feature is easy to use and smooth. There are two large buttons on either side of the chair that press in easily. The legs can be maneuvered into their folded position with minimal effort. The tray also slides on and off easily. It does, however, require two hands, as the levers are on each side rather than one in the middle, as some high chairs have. The tray on the Float cannot be put in the dishwasher, but hand cleaning increases longevity anyway, so this isn't a deal breaker for us.

The footrest is wide and has a nice feel, and you can flip it upside down, making it somewhat adjustable for smaller babies. On the upper level there is about six inches between seat and footrest, and on the lower level, about nine inches.

The five-point harness was also easy to use and adjust, with one large button at the waist connecting the parts. It doesn't, however, attach to the seat at the shoulder point, which we found a bit odd, because a baby could still slide and flop around as a result.

In addition, the leg divider doesn't extend all the way down, which we found a bit odd because chunky thighs could get caught and/or smaller babies might have the potential for slipping in the chair or getting a foot caught in the opening.

Overall, however, we really appreciated how simple and easy this chair is to use and navigate.

Ease of Cleaning

Made of a thick, durable plastic and smooth wood, this chair was very easy to clean.

The buckle for the five-point harness, although easy to use, was a bit bulky, with the potential to get food caught in the many connection points. The webbing, however, was smooth and without deep grooves, making it easy to wipe clean.

The plastic had a nice feel that wasn't overly slippery, so wiping things off was simple. There were only a few small crevices where food could get caught, so food buildup was only a minimal issue. Finally, the tray was not dishwasher safe, but it fit easily in our sink and was simple to hand wash clean.

Quality

We really appreciated the quality of this chair, especially compared with its cost. The materials felt smooth and expensive, and the chair had a clean, aesthetic look that would fit well in any home.

The design looks high-end and luxurious despite its simplicity. In addition, all the moving parts feel solid and well-built. It is worth noting that there were a couple of negative reviews regarding the tray clasps losing their strength over time, which meant that the tray would slip, but we didn't experience that in our testing.

Ease of Set Up

The Munchkin Float was very easy to assemble. For perhaps the first time ever, we didn't even need to reference the instruction manual. At around three minutes, it was one of the fastest setups of all the high chairs we tested.

Footprint and Portability

This high chair has a relatively small footprint, and not only that, but it folds up.

Designed for apartments and other small spaces, it is very lightweight and easy to move/store. We did wish that the seat itself was also tilted for storage, because although the chair was very slim at the bottom, the bulk of the seat itself means that you are still somewhat limited by space when storing it in the folded-up position.

Although the folded bottom was only about six inches across, because of the seat, you still need about fifteen inches of storage space to fit this highchair. That being said, however, the tray does clip onto the back of the chair for storage, which is a nice feature that other folding chairs do not have.

Should You Buy the Munchkin Float?

If you are looking for a simple, stylish and affordable high chair that will work in your small space, then this is the chair for you. It does its job, is made of high-quality materials, and will fold-up to store when not in use, so you're not left tripping over it all the time.

What Other High Chair Should You Consider?

If folding is less of a priority for you, then there are several other great options at a similar price point. The Skip Hop Eon 4-in-1 Multi-Stage High Chair does not fold up, but does convert to a booster and then toddler chair, so it can grow with your child. Additionally, the Munchkin 360 Cloud is very sturdy and spins 360 degrees for greater versatility.
