Our Verdict

Although it takes more than a few minutes to assemble, we found the Skip Hop EON 4-In-1 Multi-Stage High Chair quite worthy, especially for the price point. The chair itself felt solidly built and made of thick, durable materials. We also really liked that it could transition into not just a toddler chair but a children's chair, ready to slide under a craft table. As an added bonus, it felt that it would actually last that long. Getting that wood chair look on a budget can be challenging, but we found this to be a great option that is easy to clean. The tray itself was one of our favorites, as it had options for removal with both hands or one hand, should your other hand be full. Overall, this is a sturdy chair that won't break the bank but will last.

Now owned by Carter's, Skiphop was started in 2003 by new parents who wanted a different kind of diaper bag. Soon the company expanded to include many products, including high chairs, lead by Ben Bearsch, a furniture designer and dad of 2.

Ease of Use

Once assembled, we found this chair to be simple, straight-forward and easy to use. It doesn't come with a lot of extras, but what it does have, works well. The harness was easy to get on and off, and the chair was fairly lightweight, making it easy to move around, despite its large footprint.

The tray was one of the nice features. It had one option for removal with two hands on either side of the tray and one option at the front of the tray for a single hand. It slid on and off smoothly and wasn't fussy the way some trays are.

In addition, the leg restraints were NOT attached to the tray, meaning that there was no risk of the baby falling out when the tray was off. The footrest was solid but did not adjust, which could be frustrating.

Ease of Cleaning

In some ways, it's nice that this chair doesn't have a cushion. The ergonomic shape seemed comfortable, and babies didn't seem to fuss about being in the chair.

Without the cushion, clean-up was easy. The plastic was durable and easy to wipe, and the straps were easy to remove should they need to be cleaned independently. The tray insert was dishwasher safe, and the footrest was easy to wipe down, as were the wooden legs. The main deterrent to cleaning was the grooves where the tray slid on and off, which could catch food and be difficult to get clean.

Quality

The Skip Hop had a solid seat made of thick, durable plastic and wooden legs joined by white metal.

Due to its convertible nature, the seat itself was a bit large and not padded, but it was ergonomic and seemed comfortable. However, it might not be the best fit for a petite baby, as there would be ample room to slide about.

The rest of the chair was wood and metal and seemed designed to last through multiple stages of growth.

Ease of Set Up

We found the SkipHop to be one of the more difficult chairs to set up. Many high chairs come basically pre-assembled, but this one required assembly more similar to a standard piece of mail order furniture. The instructions, however, were clear and easy to follow. It just took a bit longer than we would have liked.

Footprint and Portability

This chair has a larger footprint, and its score in this metric reflects that.

While this makes it much more stable, it also means it takes up more space, which, for many of us, comes at a premium. It also does not fold up, so it can be challenging to move through smaller doorways.

Should You Buy the Skip Hop EON 4-In-1 Multi-Stage High Chair?

If you're looking for a functional, well-built high chair that will last, this is a great option. This might not be the best option if you're looking for something more portable or with more bells and whistles. But for the price point, we find it to be a winner.

What Other High Chair Should You Consider?

If budget is a concern, it is hard to beat the Skip Hop, but if you'd like an option with a reasonable price that performs better and is made of wood, we love the Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair. This chair can last through different stages, is high quality, and has a versatile design.
